Whole30 Completed!

I made it! I have completed Whole30 and I am still alive to tell about it. I weighed myself the first day and I weighed myself today and I lost a whopping 6 pounds. While I am disapointed the number on the scale was not more I am still very happy I did this and will do it again in the very near future. Due to a few injuries I am nursing I was not able to workout as hard as I would have liked although I did remain active. And my pants fit better so I know it worked.
The 'sugar' cravings have subsided a lot. I will just have to keep that in check for the upcoming holiday season. I sleep sounder and feel rested when I wake up and not too groggy (I'm not really a morning person anyway). I do not have that afternoon slump, my energy is full on all day. Despite some allergy issues in the beginning (which have also subsided) I think this was a wonderful experience and look forward to doing it again soon.

Day 15 Whole30-Half way there!

As I write this post, I am thinking back to what has transpired over the last 15 days. Although I started my Whole30 already eating paleo, I was still eating 'paleo' baked goods and other 'paleo-ish' foods. I am still in the weight loss portion of my paleo journey and still have quite a way to go so I needed to refocuse my priorities and eat right.
In the beginning I had cravings. A lot actually. But each day gets a little easier. I can't say I don't have ANY cravings because everyday I see posts about this paleo goody or that. But I don't obsess about it and I find I am able to ignore it now whereas before it would consume me.
I also have noticed that I have quite a lot more energy. I do not feel sluggish in the middle of the day at work and hardly every sit down on the weekends when I am busy 'hunting and gathering'. My biggest piece of advice I can give anyone starting paleo or Whole30 is to PLAN! Plan your meals. At least a few days in advance if not for a week. If you know what you are going to eat you tend to stick to it. Every Sunday I plan my breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and even my snacks!
If this gets easier each day, I expect that by day 30 it will be a piece of cake! Yes, I said cake!

Day 7 Whole30

Okay, it's actually day 8 but I was so beat down yesterday with allergies/sinus that I couldn't post. It has been a full week of Whole30. My cravings for sweets have diminished to virtually nothing. There has been a few opportunities to consume beer and I have abstained. So I would say so far so good.
I am a little thrown off by the allergies and what appears to be the beginning of a sinus infection. I have been (mostly) paleo since November 2010 and haven't suffered from my normal several times a year allergy/sinus infection plague. Even last fall I didn't have any issues prior to starting paleo. The only difference I can tell is that I am unable to work out as intense as I once had due to some injuries (rib dysfunction, rotator cuff tendinitis, and plantar fascitis). My diet is obviously on point since starting the Whole30. From what I have read the fall allergies are especially bad this year. Oh joy! I dug my neti pot out and have been using that the last few days.
My energy (aside from this allergy business) is good. I do not feel sleepy at work in the afternoon. I can't say that I sleep better-at least not yet until I get this allergy junk under control.
The above injuries that I mentioned have been feeling slightly better the last couple of days. I'm hoping this is a turning point because I desperately miss working out and the comradery of the gym. I have been dealing with the rib dysfunction and rotator cuff tendinitis since the middle of January and having to put any arm/overhead exercises on hold I concentrated on running AND got myself plantar fascitis. Lucky!

Day 3 Whole30

My headache assumption was confirmed when I woke up with a headache and an earache. Yep, it's weather related. Normally, I would have popped an allergy pill and probably an Ibuprofin, but alas, I'm trying to rid my body of all crap including drugs. Due to a couple of injuries I am battling I've become accustomed to taking Ibuprofin in large quantities, multiple times a day. Due to my headache lasting virtually all day it was difficult to judge my cravings and mood because both were out of control. When I got home from work I went for a walk to get some good ole' Vitamin D and when I returned my headache was gone!
Hoping for a headache free day tomorrow even though the weather is not scheduled to change.

Day 2 Whole30

Day 2 and I still struggle with cravings for something sweet. They say old habits die hard. They also this too shall pass. I'm looking forward to both!
I suffered a slight headache this evening (again could be the weather). However, I felt a fair amount of energy at work today. Although that was short lived when I went to visit my dad in the hospital. He is a difficult man and suffers from late confusional dementia, which makes visits with him exhausting. Knowing this disease is hereditary is frightening to me. Neither of my parents took very good care of themselves and are suffering at fairly young ages with a magnitude of health issues. I am hoping that by changing my eating habits and exercising I will be able to undo any inherited health afflictions.

Day 1 Whole30

What is Whole30?
http://whole9life.com/2011/06/whole-30-v4/

As my first day of Whole30 winds down, I am craving something sweet. This is why I chose to start Whole 30-or at least that is what I keep telling myself to keep from unfreezing some paleo chocolate chip cookies. Although I have been eating paleo consistently for some time now, I felt that I was consuming a little too much paleo baked goods and paleo-ish food. I wanted to get back to basics and eat whole, real food. I am still in the weight loss portion of my paleo lifestyle and am hoping this Whole30 journey will kick start the weight loss again. But aside from the weight loss, I am hoping it will change the way I think about food, my unhealthy habits towards food and cravings (the sooner the better!).
Part of the rules of Whole30 is to do it now, cold turkey. Although I planned it to begin today, had I planned well, I would have picked another day. Today my father had partial colectomy for his diverticulitis and it was my daughters first day of school. It has been a stressful day and normally I would have reached for a few paleo baked goods to help me through. But I committed to today and have done surprisingly well. Like I said, I still have those pesky cravings and aside from a headache earlier, which could be due to weather changes as it was 96 degrees here the other day and 65 today. I was also somewhat irritable at work but that could have been due to my stress level.
I look forward to detoxing myself from the excess sugar (even if it was considered paleo). I will attempt to post each day how I am doing and feeling so that I may help inspire others or at least give them an idea what to expect.

The Paleo Diet: So simple a caveman can do it!

The Paleo Diet, also known as Paleolithic diet or Caveman diet, is all about natural foods to help achieve optimal health. The human body evolved for more than 2 million years with the food found in nature, such as: meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, eggs and nuts. Things changed about 10,000 years ago when people discovered you could cook grains and potatoes to eliminate the toxins and make them edible. Is it a coincidence that this is when we as people started getting fat? I think not!

What to eat:
  • Meat, chicken, and fish
  • Eggs
  • Fruit (especially berries-strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.)
  • Vegetables (especially root vegetables, but definitely not including potatoes)
  • Nuts, eg. walnuts, brazil nuts, macadamia, almond. Do not eat peanuts (as they are legumes-and yes, NO peanut butter!)
**Please note: If you are trying to lose weight, limit your fruit and nut intake.**
What to avoid:
  • Grains- including bread, pasta, noodles, and rice
  • Beans- including string beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, snow-peas and peas
  • Potatoes
  • Dairy products
  • Sugar
  • Salt
